Matthew: How and when did Gabe Vitek & The Ivory form?

Gabe: Gabe Vitek and the Ivory got it’s name from when it was just me playing solo back in high school.  It was just myself and the piano (ivory).  I’d play on peoples decks and garages during the summer months when i was 16/17 years old.  I think it’s safe to say the music pretty much sucked back then but I kept people interested with the energy I put forth while performing.

Matthew: What genre(s) do you consider your music to be?

Gabe: I think overall the genre is Pop.  There are elements of Jazz, Rock, and Blues.

Matthew: Recently you were featured on two radio programs including the Blue Plate Special at WDVX and also an in-studio at WUTK.  What is the in-studio experience like? (Interviews, Performances, etc.)

Gabe: I really enjoy the in-studio performance.  It gives me a chance to play the tunes in a more intimate setting, even though the listening audience may be bigger, I am usually confined to a small office sized room with a mic for my vocal and my keyboard.

Matthew: In a recent blog on your myspace you announced plans to enter the studio to begin work on the third Gabe Vitek & The Ivory record.  What can you tell us about the new album?

Gabe: The recording of my 3rd record “Devil, Don’t You” will take place at the end of this month.  It will be released under my full name, Gabrahm Vitek.  It will be comprised of 7 tunes.  I’m really pumped about sharing these tunes with people.  It’s the most comfortable thing I’ve ever done and compositions I’ve never been more proud of.  The band is brand new as well.  It’s going to take on a Rootsy, Motown/Rock feel.  Horns screaming, soulful background singers wailing.  The listening experience will begin by requiring a heart guard and Dramamine.  After the meat of the record hits home it will end with a light dance filled tune that will require some fresh sneakers and a wide grin.

Matthew: Do you have a favorite band story whether it was in the studio, on tour, etc.?

Gabe: One of my favorite experiences was playing in my hometown of Bryan, OH for the first time since I’d been away at school at Belmont.  It had been 3 years and a lot of improvement since those listeners had heard me, so there was a lot of anticipation built.  The show sold out and the crowd was made up of all ages from 5 to 85 yrs old.  The audience seemed to be caught captive by Blackbeard himself for the 90 minute set.
