MATTHEW: Jessie started Faith In Shadows as an avenue to play his original music. How did you meet Warren and James? How did you know they would be a great fit for the band and the music you wanted to write?
JESSIE: I didn’t really “know” that they were the best fit. I just tried playing with them and they just fit. I met Warren and James at school. It was actually FIS’s old bass player’s idea to ask James to be in the band. I assumed that James wouldn’t want to play rock because all I ever heard James play was classical and jazz. FIS’s old bassist was the one who asked james to be in the band and everything just fell into place after that.
We, Warren and Jessie (as did all of the members of FIS), met as friends at high school. When the band’s old bass player couldn’t make it to play a show, FIS asked Warren to step in. Originally, Warren was a guitar player in another band that FIS played shows with. As it worked out, Warren’s other band broke up and he ended up staying in Faith In Shadows.

MATTHEW: What is the typical songwriting/music-making process for Faith In Shadows?
FAITH IN SHADOWS: Usually, one of the members comes up with a riff. The riff is then developed into a song and lyrics are then made to fit the song.
MATTHEW: Rainu joined Faith In Shadows while the band was working in the studio on their debut album, Shadows of My Mind. How did this newest addition to the band develop the sound and the songwriting?
FAITH IN SHADOWS: With the addition of Rainu, the band was able to experiment with different methods of vocal delivery. The element of female vocals really expanded the vocal diversity in FIS’s music and added a fresh, new perspective to our songwriting.

MATTHEW: What is your coolest/favorite/most-memorable band story?
FAITH IN SHADOWS: In May 2009, Jessie’s senior prom and a battle of the bands at RCKTWN fell on the same night. Instead of choosing an event to attend, Faith In Shadows decided to do both. Jessie and Rainu got ready for Prom after checking in and ran to the Opryland hotel for prom. They got to Opryland and almost immediately had to race back to RCKTWN to play their set. They played completely dressed up in Prom gear (Corsages, Boutonnieres, and suits all made up) and stayed until the end of the show. Afterwards, Jessie and Rainu drove back to Prom and finished the night slightly sweaty, but all dressed up.
MATTHEW: What are some of your aspirations for the future?
FAITH IN SHADOWS: Hopefully, we would like to be a successful touring band writing innovative and inspiring music. We have a lot of different perspectives and backgrounds that makes our music distinctive and uniquely beautiful.
