By going back their roots, Night Beds promises a sound that is authentically all their own. The nights spent red-eyed fighting with simplicity and complexity, shows in the music from the midnight journey. Winston Yellen and his friend, Matt Wilcox, have formed a unique project with some vocals and guitars. Straight from the humble beginnings of a Colorado basement, Night Beds presents the world with three EP’s night beds, every fire; every joy, and hide from it. The eclectically-geared sounds are challenging to the listener, but allow for an expansion on what is considered authentically expressive.
Moreover, the Wilcox and Yellen try to keep a sincere notion about the way that music is crafted. For their upcoming full-length release, Country Sleep, they spent the writing period of the album in Johnny Cash’s old cabin residence in Hendersonville, TN. They found that sometimes all it takes is a guitar to make something soulful.
Yellen said of their creative process that it’s “taking the selfishness out of art and putting some sincerity to it.”
Night Beds is currently the sole artist on a label founded by Yellen called Southstead records. With his previous experience in A&R and musical influences, Yellen is trying to find a way to make art and speak to an audience simultaneously. The label is Yellen’s endeavor to make music not only profitable for a company, but also for a charity. In his travels in Africa, he was inspired to help the community, as much as he helps himself through music. Through partnering with Children’s Hope Chest, a non-governmental organization out of Colorado Springs, each album gives a dollar of their profits to the cause. These donations to Children’s Hope Chest benefit orphans mainly in Swaziland. Along with Grant Watson and Belmont alumni Connor Carroll, Yellen is breaking the mold with his business model and creative efforts aspiring to help underprivileged peoples and inspire audiences.
As they debuted the Night Beds to Nashville for the first time last weekend at The Big Nashty Festival in Gallatin, Yellen and his team are beginning their mission in the highly competitive world of Nashville’s music scene. Creatively, the future promises a struggle to stay sincere to their cause of authentic music and community.
Nevertheless with Yellen’s thoughts on music boiling down to “You do music for yourself first and then to help connect with someone else”, they are sure not to lose sight.
