Tre Houston: Urban Pop Winner

With Houston’s win at the Urban Pop Showcase, all of Belmont is starting to ask questions about his roots. Through an Towermix.com interview with Tre last week, some of these answers came to light.

Beginning his path to ingenuity in Texas, Tre started listening to local Houston rappers alongside the endeavors of filming with his brothers. Unlike his now videographer brothers, the rapping took precedence over the filming for him. When taking into account that Tre is both the business and artist, the experimentation of his early days has paid off with his well-rounded ability to serve as both. Ultimately, his favorite part about the music industry is songwriting. Alongside Professor Dave Tough, Tre began learning about the art of co-writes and the nuances of production.

Tre says of production that, “If I could be a rapper that got paid to sit in a studio, I’d put out a CD every month.”

This kind of perseverance and love of creativity shows in Tre’s music. There are now 4 CD’s to his name along with a synchronization deal that he shares with Mr. Dave Tough on some TV commercials. Through learning about the industry alongside a veteran songwriter and collaborator like Dave Tough, Tre is grateful for the mentoring and advice.

Ultimately, Tre is still reeling from the success of winning the Urban Pop Showcase. The idea of applying for the spot was not actually made until the last minute. His manager, Natalie Moore, suggested that he enter the contest. In a rush, Tre put together a band and the tracks for the audition. Some of his players weren’t well versed in rap and R&B, but the camaraderie quickly developed. Furthermore, the win hasn’t really sunk in. As for the future, Tre hopes to have enough fame to provide for a comfortable life, but not enough to be “badgered” by the press. With all eyes on next semester’s Best of the Best, where Tre will again perform, the best is in the future.
