Kopecky Family Band Featured on NPR

In an industry where many bands seem to be following the same trends, the Kopecky Family Band is finding new ways to cater the product, their music, to fans.

Check them out now on NPR!

Two of the band’s members, Kelsey Joy Kopecky and Gabe Simon, said the band tries to find as many non-traditional ways to sell their music and merchandise.  “As we play more and more, we find that what people like is the emotional aspect and the personal aspect…the family aspect of the music,” said Gabe, who sings and plays several instruments in the band.

KFB caters their product to what the consumer wants, so fans can get more “bang for their buck.”

“We find what we are good at creating, such as visual art, and tailor our product in that way,” added Kelsey, another one of the band’s main vocalists and keyboard player.  She designs most of the album artwork and show flyers for the band.  KFB also adds a very personal aspect to their merchandise, selling handmade rings, feather key chains, and buttons, all of which Kelsey creates.

“It’s about finding ways to make our fans connect to us through our product,” said Gabe.  “The business side of us is ironically our most creative side.”

All seven members of KFB met at Belmont University, which Gabe and Kelsey agree have helped the band’s journey in the music industry so far.  To name a few, drummer David Krohn graduated this May with a Music Business degree, and violinist Ben Kaufman with a degree in Marketing.  Kelsey graduated in the Fall of 2008 with a Music Business degree, and Gabe also graduated in May with a double major in Music Business and Entrepreneurship.  “I’ve developed a great network of people from internships alone,” he said.

KFB has recently become more widely recognized, through playing esteemed music festivals such as South by Southwest (SXSW), being a College Music Journal (CMJ) number one pick, and having their music played on NPR.  Gabe and Kelsey said it’s been neat, seeing the immediate pay-off of press, and how being involved in these endeavors has helped boost the band’s recognition.

As the group moves forward, they hope to continue creating music with an original sound that progresses from record to record.  “Each record produced is produced differently.  We all feed off each other so much, and that’s an element we’ve learned to keep in the studio,” said Kelsey.  Gabe added, “As much as we want to make great music, we want to be different.  We want to make it special.”
